Airstream and NASA

By Out-of-Doors Mart on March 15th, 2021 in Airstream Blog

At first, you probably wouldn’t think that Airstream Travel Trailers would have much to do with space exploration. But believe it or not, there is actually a connection between NASA and Airstream. The story behind this connection is an interesting tale that speaks to the quality and attention to detail you can expect from every Airstream product.

Looking for an Airstream in South Carolina? Airstream of Greensboro is the perfect place to shop, with a huge selection of new and pre-owned models, great prices, and a friendly staff and just a short drive up the highway.  Stop by, call or browse online today to find the travel trailer of your dreams.

A Huge Challenge

It’s easy to take for granted a few generations later, but the idea of putting humans on the moon was absolutely incredible at the time. There are countless challenges associated with making it to the moon and back, and some of those challenges are microscopic in nature. NASA was worried about the potential for astronauts to bring back organisms that are foreign to earth and could pose a health threat to the general population. Incredibly, this is where Airstream enters the picture.

Secure Transportation

NASA’s need was simple – they required a secure vessel that could be used to quarantine the astronauts for a period of time after they returned to earth from the moon. Having somewhere for them to live securely while evaluating their health and looking for any signs of trouble was essential. These Mobile Quarantine Facilities would need to be able to stand up to the rigors of travel, which is why using an Airstream as the foundation for the unit made a lot of sense.

A Custom Creation

Of course, an Airstream trailer straight off the shelf wasn’t going to get the job done. So, the company set to work on adapting a standard trailer to meet the needs of this project. Some of the changes that were made from a typical trailer included the addition of an internal negative pressure system, a medical exam table, and mounted seats with seat belts for safety in transit.

In the end, these Mobile Quarantine Facilities created by Airstream were used for three of the Apollo missions. These units were not considered necessary after those three missions, but Airstream had already left an unforgettable mark on space travel. Three of the four units that Airstream produced for this program are still on display for visitors to explore, so be sure to check one out for yourself if you have the opportunity.

The Durability You Require for Your Adventures

It’s safe to say that if an Airstream travel trailer (in a modified state) is good enough to quarantine astronauts returning from space, it’s more than up to the challenge of helping you and your family explore the country. Whether you want to use your Airstream in South Carolina or elsewhere across this great nation, you can bet that it will be ready to meet your needs. NASA is famous for their commitment to excellence and their desire for nothing but the best, so the fact that they trusted Airstream with such an important project tells you everything you need to know.
