Myrtle Beach is undoubtedly one of the country’s most visually striking locales. This coastal city is perfectly positioned in an expansive portion of the beach in northeastern South Carolina referred to as the Grand Strand. Myrtle Beach residents and visitors enjoy a lovely subtropical climate, spacious beaches, plenty of shopping opportunities and some truly amazing food. This is precisely why nearly 15 million people visit Myrtle Beach every single year.
The Myrtle Beach Economy
As most would guess, the local economy is fueled by tourism. From retail sites to restaurants, resorts, hotels and beyond, countless businesses tailor the bulk of their services to outsiders who are in town for a few days or weeks. Tourism has been and likely always will be the primary economic driver of the greater Myrtle Beach area. However, the Myrtle Beach economy would not completely collapse if it were not a tourist hotspot. Myrtle Beach also has a strong manufacturing base that generates ceramic products, foam, rubber, plastic, cardboard, and other materials.
Things to do in Myrtle Beach
Visitors and locals alike rave about the area’s seemingly endless number of musical concerts, conventions and other events. The local culinary scene is particularly vibrant thanks to the constant influx of tourists. All in all, Myrtle Beach has nearly 2,000 restaurants, many of which specialize in seafood thanks to the city’s proximity to the water. Furthermore, there are countless tourist shops, nightclubs and dinner theaters to boot. Be sure to take in a live show at one of the local theaters. Live shows are available throughout the entirety of the year at Myrtle Beach venues ranging from the Carolina Opry to the Alabama Theater, the Calvin Gilmore Theater, the Medieval Times Family Dinner Theater and Asher Theater.
The Myrtle Beach Boardwalk is particularly popular ever since it opened back in 2010. National Geographic has named this boardwalk as the country’s third-best. The boardwalk features the Myrtle Beach Skywheel, a 200-foot behemoth featuring glass gondolas that provide quite the impressive view of the Atlantic Ocean.
Shop Till You Drop in Myrtle Beach
Myrtle Beach is a shoppers paradise, mainly because tourists show up throughout the entirety of the year looking for new ways to spend their money. Stroll through the Coastal Grand Mall or the Myrtle Beach Mall and you will find all sorts of stores, movie theaters, food courts, and other features. Broadway at the Beach is another popular shopping destination. Positioned on 350 acres by the US 17 Bypass and Lake Broadway, this is the most expansive entertainment festival complex in the entire state. Barefoot Landing just might be the south’s most scenic shopping complex. This outdoor shopping venue is positioned by the lovely Intracoastal Waterway. Here, you will find an abundance of stores as well as attractions including the House of Blues.
Myrtle Beach Sports
Though few would guess it, Myrtle Beach has its fair share of sporting events. This scenic area is home to the Carolina League’s Myrtle Beach Pelicans, a surprisingly popular local baseball team. The Pelicans’ talent proves their worth in Myrtle Beach with the hope of being promoted to the Chicago Cubs. The Pelicans play at the oddly named TicketReturn.com Field.
Head on over to Myrtle Beach Speedway and you will find stock car racing on asphalt, semi-banked track. Myrtle Beach is also a golfers’ paradise. Whether you are interested in conventional golf or miniature golf, you will have no shortage of opportunities in Myrtle Beach. The one and only Tiger Woods has declared Myrtle Beach to be a golfing mecca.
